First we need to clarify some terminology. People are beginning to use the word "Lumineers" like the word "Xerox," to describe a cosmetic dentistry procedure. Lumineers is actually a trademarked brand name of porcelain veneers.
Lumineers are promoted as being extra thin. They are thinner than the average porcelain veneer—0.3 millimeter instead of the average 0.5 millimeter. But there are other brands that are just as thin, such as DURAThin.
The company that makes Lumineers restricts their use so that only their company-owned dental laboratory in California can make them. While this helps maximize their profit, we don't feel it provides the best product for the patient. Dr. Kaake has an excellent working relationship with Valley Dental Arts in the Twin Cities, which has the reputation of being one of the finest porcelain veneer laboratories in the country. They do absolutely beautiful work. That's where Dr. Kaake sends his smile makeover cases.
